Here are some pictures I took while in Duluth MN on the 22nd of this month....

 

The start of the ice mounds is well under wave on Lake Superior's South Shore....Though still very small, it's the start....Once in full swing the mound can reach to be as high as 10 to 25 feet tall or more....They aren't as safe as everyone thinks....There are hollow areas, if you happen to hit of those you could fall through right into the water of unknown depths.....My advise is to stay off the ice mounds....If you must go on them take an icepick with you and every so many inches pound it into the ice, if its goes through really easy back out of that area, also listen to how the ice sounds, if it sounds hollow get out of that area, its not safe....You should also have someone else with you and a 20 to 30 foot rope this way one or another can throw the rope down and pull the other out with any luck....I have been on the ice mounds for many years so yes I know what I'm doing....Remember this Lake Superior is one Lake you don't play with, she can take your life in a second, yes even in the winter....Enjoy her beauty, but never cross her.....Stay safe if you are on any ice on Lake Superior....Listen for the clues that she is telling you and you will come home alive.....

11/10/2012 Gales

November 10^th brought gales to Lake Superior…37 years ago Lake Superior took the lives of the men on the Edmund Fitzgerald.. My day started off with thunderstorms by time I got into Southern Washburn CNTY there was hail covering HWY 53 for about 1 ½ miles…The rest of the drive North stared some hail and areas of heavy rain….By time I got to Lake Superior there was still some rain, however that pushed off to the Northeast rather fast…The rest of the day was cloudy with drizzle and off and on fog….Winds were out of the Northeast 25 to 35 MPH with gusts up to 43/45 MPH..This set the stage for some very big waves…By early afternoon there was no beach, was all under the waves…The temps were in the 30s for most of the day, they did warm to around 40 right before I was ready to call it a day…Nevertheless it was cold…Somehow I found myself getting nailed not by one wave but three of them big suckers…I was really shocked by how there was hardly anyone out there, I only saw like 4 people all day, which was fine with me as I really wasn’t in the mood to be around people, and didn’t have to answer a bunch of questions…Give me every day like I would be happier!  So it was a great day for me…. Sorry I’m late in posting this…..
I headed back up to Lake Superior on the 9^th of August…..I was watching the forecasting computer models over the last few days and saw there was a likely hood of some wave action…The morning of the 9^th I checked a few web cams from up around the Duluth area…Superior was still calm… I got everything packed into my truck (office) and headed North… On the way North I ran into some rather strong thunderstorms from time to time….I knew then the backdoor cold front was close to where I was at and had already pushed through the head of Lake Superior, which was a good thing as I knew the Northeast winds were picking up there….
I got up to the head of Lake Superior around 12:17 PM or so….Waves still not that big, but looking out at the lake I could see that was about to change, and it sure did!
